Nivard Thoes' Graphic Design Sweatshop is located in a former Ping-Pong table factory in Guangzhou, specializing in visual communication for the creative industry.
Dutch graphic designer Nivard Thoes graduated at the Royal Academy of Art (the Netherlands). Since 2006 he has been working for an eclectic range of clients in China often in collaboration with Guangzhou based Wang Xu & Associates, one of the pioneering graphic design studios in mainland China. Most notable commissions include the monograph design of Japanese designer Hideki Nakajima, the book-series ‘Architecture in Translation’ and the visual identity and signage system for Times Museum in Guangzhou.
Nivard's work has been exhibited at various international exhibitions, such as the 20th Int. Poster and Graphic Design Festival of Chaumont (France-2009), the Anti-Design Festival (London-2010) and at Central Station Amsterdam with billboard artwork created for De Appel-Arts Centre. His projects featured in several design books and periodicals, including ‘Common Interest’ by Index Book (ESP), ‘Typodarium 2012’ by German magazine SLANTED, French design magazine Etapes (#174) and ‘Communication Arts Magazine’ (US-2011).
Since 2011 Nivard is partner at multidisciplinary joint venture UNITCODE "International Alliance for Mental Hygiene, Mechanical Aesthetics and Design", focusing on branding and interaction projects.
